Flies with steady wingbeats and glides, extended neck and trailing legs. Usually found in muddy waters, wading with slowly sweeping bill for fish, shrimp, crustaceans. Usually silent. Grunts, nasal coughs.

Found in small freshwater swamps and waterways, farm dams, irrigated areas.
