Mostly arboreal. Spirals up tree trunks gleaning insects. Solitary outside breeding season. Prefers probing in rough bark for insects, invertebrates. Takes nectar and ants. Quickly repeated piping whistles. Upward inflecting, loud musical ringing and trilling song.
Found in rainforests, eucalypt forests, woodlands, banksia scrub, mallee and brigalow.
