Usually seen in small family groups. Flight is laboured with long trailing legs. Feeds slowly stalking in shallows for minute organisms. Seizes prey from on or near surface, mainly aquatic insects but also molluscs and crustaceans.

Found in shallow edges of saline or freshwater ponds, estuaries, swamps.
