Flies with neck retracted, feet trailing and slow, buoyant, deep wingbeats. Waits and watches or stalks prey including small fish, eels, frogs, rats and insects.

Found in freshwater, brackish or saltwater wetlands, mangroves, dams, tidal mudflats, coastal waters and inland lakes.
