Patrols skies with slow powerful wingbeats; long, broad, upswept wings. Soars high. Singular, pairs or family groups. Swoops, snatching fish and marine animals from the water surface. Also, waterfowl, nestlings, rabbits are taken. Scavenges on carrion.

Found inland, fresh or brackish rivers, coastal shores and offshore islands.
