Best identified by geographic region (different races). Distinctive, reddish tan shoulder patch. Sprightly, bouncy hops using tail for balance. Feeds in family groups, mostly on insects, some fruit and seeds. Is seldom seen out in the open.

Found in scrubby understorey of woodlands, forests, heaths, parks and gardens.
