Territorial. Well camouflaged. Roosts on a branch during the day. When disturbed, freezes, with bill pointing upwards imitating a broken limb. Nocturnal, hunting after dusk and before dawn, dropping from perch onto prey including grasshoppers, spiders, other insects, mammals, birds, frogs.

Found in all habitats, except arid areas without trees. Parks and gardens.
