Ground dwelling. Rarely flies more than a few metres. Usually in pairs. Mouse-like hop searching for insects, seeds. Male sings briefly from a perch before diving into cover. Succession of trills and chattering warbles.

Found in damp coastal to alpine areas in moist heaths, wetland edges, samphire flats and dunes.
