Sometimes seen in pairs, usually in large flocks. Flies in line or 'V' formations, neck extended. Feeds on vast quantities of grasshoppers and locusts. Also frogs, small reptiles, mammals.

Found in shallows of wetlands, swamps, waterways, pasture, grasslands, parkland, sewerage ponds.
