Usually alone or in pairs. Feeds on crustaceans, sea worms and molluscs. Uses chisel-like bill to prise open shells. Loud piping and high-pitched 'kleep-kleep' call.

Found along rocky coasts, coral reefs and estuaries, on beaches less frequently.
