Mostly seen in small flocks or pairs, foraging on the ground. Flutters or scurries from one patch of shade to another. Flies quickly into trees when disturbed. Feeds on grass seeds, leaves, flower buds and fruits.

Found in lightly timbered grasslands, mallee, urban parks, gardens and farmland.
