Prefers the upper canopy of smooth-barked trees. Communal, in family groups. Feeds almost exclusively on insects. Forages among peeling bark strips or sometimes on fallen timber. 

Found in cool, dense, wet, eucalypt forests with tall trees, along gullies and watercourses in mountainous areas.
