Feeds mostly on bees, wasps and other insects taken in flight. Sometimes from the ground or hovering over water. Plunges for aquatic life. Prey is taken back to the perch, battered then eaten.
Found in open country, woodlands, savannahs, shrublands, semi-cleared areas, usually near water. Avoids forests, rainforests and treeless areas.
