Widespread, often solitary, sometimes in huge flocks. Usually fly in 'V' formations, less frequently in a single line. Dives underwater in pursuit of shoaling fish, crustaceans, molluscs. Webbed feet used for propulsion.

Found in inshore waters including bays, estuaries, harbours and inland rivers and wetlands.
