Undulating flight reveals their rufous-coloured underwing coverts and grey flight feathers. Ground feeder, prefers small seeds of native grasses and small shrubs, occasionally insects.

Found in open forests, scrubland, especially with acacias, open and well-grassed woodlands, all with water nearby. Seen in parks, gardens and farmland and offshore islands.
