Feeds hopping, picking up insects, occasionally in low vegetation. Plaintive, sharp, deep whistles. Southern range: whipcrack. Northern range: rising and falling notes.

Southern range: found in damp eucalypt forests, heathlands and tea-tree scrub, parks and gardens. Northern range: found in temperate rainforests of Antartic Beech above 500m.
