Usually in large groups. Low, dashing, undulating and erratic flight. Rises vertically from shrubs and sings briefly before diving back to cover. Chases other birds from its nectar source. Actively forages in the lower strata, mostly reliant on nectar. Also manna, honeydew, fruit and insects gleaned or caught in mid-air.

Found in coastal heath, forests, woodlands, parks and gardens, particularly with banksias.
