Masked Lapwing

Common

Two races. Northern birds, race miles (Masked Plover) have larger wattles extending behind the eyes and white necks. Southern birds, race novaehollandiae (Spur-winged Plover) are larger with a black hind neck, sides of breast and smaller wattles. Interbreeding occurs between subspecies.

Usually wary, ground dwelling, in pairs. Quick wingbeats.

Found in open, short-grassed areas near swamps, lagoons, mudflats, and urban parks and gardens.
