Flight is swift with shallow wingbeats. Ground feeds on corms, seeds, roots and bulbs. Uses long upper mandible for digging up roots and bulbs. Feeds in flocks with 'sentinel' posted to warn of danger.

Found in woodlands, open forests and adjacent grasslands. Also in urban parkland.
