Flight is strong and direct with head slightly up. Often found in urban parks. Roosts and nests communally. Feeds in flocks in coastal areas or singly inland. Eats aquatic animals, fish, crustaceans, insects, yabbies inland.

Found in coastal lagoons, sheltered harbours, dams, lakes. Fresh or salt water.
