Secretive. Well camouflaged. Flutters weakly, tail trailing. Hops, runs, usually under cover. Singles pairs or family groups. Gleans insects. Often runs on mud, taking aquatic insects, crustaceans.

Found in reed beds, wetland grass tussocks, freshwater swamps, saltmarshes.
