Most commonly seen on inland waters. Flies in large flocks in V-shaped formation. Dives and swims for fish, crustaceans, aquatic insects. Working in groups they corral schools of fish and feed together.

Prefers inland freshwater wetlands. Less frequently sheltered coastal waterways.
