Usually in pairs or small groups. Flies quickly and settles again. Runs, squats. Feeds along beaches at high tide as waves retreat, running quickly, bobbing for insects, small crustaceans, invertebrates.

Found in grassy sand dunes, sandy beaches, estuaries, coastal lakes. In southwest WA, along shores of inland salt lakes.
