Australia's only true diving duck. Stays well out from shore, usually in pairs or large groups. Rarely comes ashore. Flight is fast. Rises vertically with loud whirring wings if alarmed. Dives for small aquatic creatures and some plant material. May travel 30-40m before resurfacing.

Found in large, deep-water swamps, lagoons and flooding inland rivers.
