Flies in 'V' formations. Rapid wingbeats, gliding. Often seen resting on sandbanks or poles drying their outstretched wings. Feeds in groups or alone. Shallow underwater dives using feet to propel itself after prey.

Found in inland rivers, farm dams, coastal estuaries and sheltered inlets.
