Often hovers while feeding on nectar from flowers. Specialised bill to probe tubular flowers. Occasionally takes insects from foliage or by sallying mid-air.

Found generally east of the Great Dividing Range in heathlands, forests with heath understorey and well-vegetated parks and gardens.
