Usually solitary, mostly seen stalking prey in shallow water. Strikes and seizes prey including fish, crustaceans, amphibians and insects.

Found in shallows, intertidal mudflats, wetland shallows, mangroves, reefs, irrigated pastures, sewerage ponds.
