Runs and swims strongly. Flies with legs trailing. Usually in groups of 2-7 birds. Feeds on vegetable matter, insects, fish, worms, molluscs. Often up-ends when feeding.

Found in parkland lakes, permanent swamps, lakes, waterways with grassy banks and reed cover.
