Diamond Firetail

Moderately common

Usually seen feeding on the ground in flocks of 5-40 birds. Male courtship display with long grass stem. Ground foraging, usually close to cover. Ripe to half-ripe seeds, sometimes insects. Drinks frequently. Plaintive, repeated 'oowee' call. Harsh alarm call.

Found in open eucalypt forests, heath and mallee fringes, grassy woodlands, near water.
