Usually in small groups of 5-6. Takes flight with vigorous whistling wingbeats alternating with long glides on stiff, outstretched wings. Flicks its long tail when alighting.

Avoids heavily timbered country. Prefers lightly wooded grasslands near water, farmland, parks and gardens.
