Wary, active, excitable. Solitary, in pairs or less often in small groups. Feeds briskly wading in shallows or in mud, snatching worms, crustaceans or molluscs.

Found around the edges of fresh, brackish or saline lakes, pools and inland wetlands and billabongs.
