Shy and wary, flying close to the ground when disturbed. Usually solitary or in pairs. Large groups occur around water at dusk. Call is a deep, resonant 'oom' repeated continuously with 3 second intervals in breeding season.

Found in wet and dry forests, woodlands, mallee, heaths, farmland and gardens. Avoids dense rainforests.
