Commpletely aquatic diving duck almost unable to walk on land. Remaines well out from shore. If alarmed, usually dives, resurfacing up to 50m away. Bottom-feeder for vegetable matter and insects.

Found in deep, permanent, heavily vegetated freshwater swamps and open lakes in winter.
