In singles, pairs or family groups. Flight is swift, shallow wingbeats, soaring high over feeding area. While feeding hovers with feet dangling and drops silently onto prey. Feeds almost exclusively on the introduced house mouse. Also eats grasshoppers, rats, small reptiles and insects.
Found in open woodlands and grasslands, heathlands, saltbush, farmland and parks.
