Flies with neck elongated and feet trailing behind tail. Usually seen in lines or 'V' formations, soaring to 300m on thermals. Feeds in shallow water for aquatic insects, molluscs, caterpillars, grasshoppers.
Found in freshwater wetlands, swamps, streams, lakes and tidal mudflats, irrigated pasture, rubbish tips, urban parks.
