Usually solitary or in pairs. Flight is laboured and fluttering. Feeds on aquatic plants, molluscs, insects picked from mud. Sharp metallic 'crake' call and chattering.

Found in well-vegetated edges of marshes, water channels, swamps, estuaries and saltmarshes.
