Wary, usually seen well away from the shore. After breeding, during moulting phase, thousands of birds flock together forming rafts. Strong, direct flight in long lines or 'V' formation.

Found in marshes, pastures, brackish or freshwater shallow lakes, open woodlands, tidal flats, saltmarshes near fresh water.
