Flying in loose 'V' formations, they can travel long distances. Riding updraughts of warm air in wide soaring circles, they can reach heights of 3000m. Usually gregarious, co-operative, feeding in shallow waters on fish and crustaceans.

Found in sheltered estuaries, rivers, mudflats, inland lakes.
